Blossom Fact Sheet
Company ProfileWith headquarters in Irvine, California, the team behind Blossom, a smart watering controller that conserves water and significantly reduces water utility bills, knows a thing or two about the need for water conservation. With backing from companies including Vizio and Accton, Blossom’s founders have leveraged their experience in consumer electronics, water resources, manufacturing, cloud computing, networking and hardware to bring a product to market that can make a difference and have an impact across multiple sectors.
The Smart HomeThe Smart Home concept is growing in popularity: Gartner is predicting a typical family home could contain more than 500 smart devices by 2022. Home automation via the Internet of Things brings numerous benefits – and smartphones and tablets are market drivers. According to Parks Associates: Upwards of 90% of smart home device owners use mobile apps to access cloud-supported services associated with their devices.
The Importance of Water ConservationWater usage in the United States is rising every year, and the pressure is on all across the country to conserve water. Almost every region has experienced a water shortage in recent years – according to the EPA, 40 out of 50 state water managers expect water shortages under average conditions in some portion of their states over the next decade.
Much of water use can be attributed to residential irrigation, and up to 50 percent of the water used for irrigation is wasted. Most residential irrigation systems rely on conventional watering controllers that don’t take actual water needs, based on vegetation or rainfall numbers, into account.
The Blossom Smart Watering ControllerLeveraging the power of cloud computing, Blossom self-programs existing sprinklers based on local forecast and daily data from thousands of weather stations and satellites, combined with user feedback, to create an optimized watering schedule. Users control Blossom from their smart phone or tablet.
Blossom is designed to be different. It addresses connectivity challenges by using Powerline, which makes the installation process simple and provides a highly reliable connection. With Powerline technology, Blossom turns electrical outlets into Internet connections – making its range essentially limitless for the home.
At the time of launch and as of March 2016, no other smart irrigation controller offers the option of Powerline and Wi-Fi connectivity.
It goes where others can’t. Blossom is the only sprinkler controller that is built to be deployed indoors or outdoors. It is IP54 rated, making it the only out of the box option in the market for users that have controllers deployed outdoors. For users that may prefer a Wi-Fi solution, Blossom also provides this as an alternative.
Blossom – and all of its built-in intelligence – is comparably priced to a conventional outdoor 12-station sprinkler controller.
Blossom 8Making the concept of a yard that can think for itself a reality for consumers everywhere, Blossom’s new, eight-zone Blossom 8 Smart Watering Controller features Wi-Fi connectivity and a sleek, slim, low-profile design. Blossom 8 is a highly reliable, simple, cost-effective solution that takes the guesswork out of controlling sprinklers and simplifies life.
The controller allows users to truly ‘set it and forget it’ and there’s no need for updates or integration with other IoT devices.
Blossom 8 was created as a more affordable solution to make the smart yard go mainstream. In fact, Blossom 8 is priced lower than any other smart controller available today.
Smart Sprinkler MarketAn early player in the smart sprinkler market, Blossom and has been embraced by customers in all 50 states and is available at The Home Depot, Amazon, Best Buy, NewEgg.com, SmartHome.com and through the company’s website. Blossom is building upon its enormously successful Kickstarter launch – which brought in more than triple its funding goal – and changing the way that more people water their lawns.
Ease of Use & SavingsWith apps for iOS and Android, Blossom gives users control of their yard, no matter where they are. Both controllers work with a user’s current system’s wires, valves and sprinklers – an easy retrofit, they’re not a rip and replace, and can be installed in less than 15 minutes.
Blossom products can pay for themselves in water cost savings in less than one year. Once installed, the smart watering controllers can shave up to 30 percent off of future water bills.
LeadershipManrique Brenes, Founder
Kaido Kert, CTO
With a background in consumer electronics at companies including Skype and Cisco – as well as ten years spent in the water irrigation industry – Brenes has a storied career. He has pioneered the development of various products, authored fourteen patents and installed the first subsurface irrigation system for sugar cane in Central America. The technology took off in the country, and it is now one of the commonly used methods for sugar cane irrigation in his home country of Costa Rica.
Brenes was joined in founding Blossom by longtime friend and colleague Kert. Having previously worked in software development at Skype, Kert has years of experience in embedded systems and large-scale consumer electronics manufacturing. Together, the Blossom team has over 75 prior patent filings between them
